Paul Pashley, the Sheffield born big band singer, will proudly launch Wednesday Night Live 2009 in Leopold Square on 3 June. The man who was booked by Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen to sing at their star-studded wedding and has sung alongside Beverley Knight at Manchester United’s player awards, will perform two live half hour sets of ‘rat pack’ inspired tracks at 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

Paul Pashley commented: “I am honoured to be launching this year’s Wednesday Night Live and hope that I can bring a bit of energy to the 2009 programme. Leopold Square is like an oasis in Sheffield city centre with a fantastic atmosphere so please come down and enjoy the first of many animated Wednesday evenings.“

Wednesday Night Live was launched in 2008 by Creativesheffield with the objectives of creating a lively city centre environment, developing the early evening economy and driving footfall around the city by drawing people into the city after working hours.

This year’s initiative will see bars, restaurants and other city centre venues provide special offers and events on Wednesday evenings; Museums Sheffield and the Winter Garden remain open until 8pm throughout the Summer months; and participating retailers open until a minimum of 7pm including M&S, John Lewis, TK Maxx, Debenhams, Livsstil and Lejurra. To complement this, all journeys in Sheffield are only £1 after 7pm on First buses - making Sheffield city centre the place to be throughout Summer 2009.

In addition, Manasamitra are back by popular demand after the success of their Wednesday Night Live Indian Summer evening last year. The Indian dance and music group will create an evening of energetic, colourful Bhangra dhol drumming and dancing which will bring a taste of northern India to the Peace Gardens on 3 June from 5.30pm until 7pm.

"It is an absolute pleasure to come back to Sheffield and launch the second season of the successful Wednesday Night Live series” commented Supriya Nagarajan, Director of Manasamitra. “We hope that the vibrant dance moves will add to the ambience and liveliness of the city centre."

Cubana will also be launching their Wednesday Flamenco nights; Popolo will launch their ‘£3.95 Wednesdays’; Sheffield Theatres will launch their ‘Win Ticket Wednesdays’; and the Lyceum will begin their pre-show talks starting with Westside Story on 3 June.

Councillor Sylvia Dunkley, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Streetscene, expressed support for the initiative on behalf of Sheffield City Council: “It’s great to see local talent, such as Paul Pashley, contributing towards Wednesday Night Live - boosting recognition for both themselves and our city. This initiative is a wonderful opportunity for residents of Sheffield and visitors to experience more of our Sheffield’s cultural highlights.”

Brendan Moffett, Director of Strategic Marketing at Creativesheffield, concluded: “Creativesheffield aim to bring Sheffield city centre to life throughout the summer months for the benefit of our businesses and for the community to enjoy. There will be something for everyone this year, so Sheffield people should get out there and enjoy everything that the city has to offer!”
