Choirs from all over the UK will be performing in Leopold Square on Saturday 10th July, as part of the National Street Choirs this year is dubbed “Streetchoir Sheffield”.
The festival, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday, held in a different location, each year and will bring 700 singers to Sheffield for the weekend.
Streetchoir Sheffield are to use Leopold Square as one of their informal 'busking' sites during Saturday afternoon, between 12.30 and 3.00pm.
Leopold Square is a collection of top quality restaurants, bars and a boutique hotel. Located in Sheffield’s West End, at the corner of Leopold Street and West Street, the square is within 100 yards of Fargate, Sheffield’s popular shopping area and close to the trendy Division Street.
The National Street Choir Festival is a long standing annual weekend of song that aims to create a connection and sense of community between choirs nationwide, bringing its ideas and music directly to local audiences.
Performers will congregate in Leopold Square and sing unaccompanied, programmed on a rotating basis, a popular performance schedule similar to the Chance to Dance Festival which the square also sponsored this spring.
Ann-Marie Duffy, of Ask Developments, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting the festival’s busking performances in Leopold Square. It’s a great event for all ages and tastes and will complement the weekend’s live music schedule, which also features Nicola Farnon performing jazz standards and soul classics on Sunday.”
Val Regan of Streetchoir Sheffield said “this is a fantastic opportunity to hear community choirs from all over the country right here on your doorstep for free. The city centre will literally be singing.”
The National Street Choir Festival runs over an action packed weekend with choirs from all over the UK participating. It opens on Friday evening with registration and a welcome event.
The festival celebrated its 25th anniversary in Manchester in 2007 and its repertoire has expanded to include world music, folk, pop, rap and soul, as well as the original protest songs at the heart of the festival.
Building on last year’s successful Sunday events, Leopold Square’s live programme has been running from May through to mid-September and some of the confirmed acts for the summer include The Dizzy Club and Tombo Trio, as well as the hugely successful Barrio Latino salsa party.
